[[Emma. Mana. x3 posting it now, just, y'know, incase you feel like chipping in before thursday...]] Chirp, chirp, the birds tweet, fluttering about above the ground, looking for any seeds the mice have left behind. They still hold out hope for food, although it is the end of December. With the next day came January, and with it the coldest part of the year. February would be no better. The birds would wise up soon. It amazed Ren that they were here now, Where in China they migrated so much sooner. Japan was warmer, and more pleasant than the harsh winters Ren had suffered at "home". "Home" because, no matter how Ren looked at it, he felt much greater affinity for all that was in Japan, relative to China. He felt no want to go back, although the coming new year brought him one step closer to the day he would have to return. Regardless of this, Ren considered Japan to be his home, no matter what his birthplace or blood. The New year didn't mean as much to Ren as it did the others. He knew back at the inn yoh would be relaxing with anyone he could summon up, probably that midget and Ryu, and preparing for the first shrine visit of the new year. As Ren was infact Chinese, he celebrated the Chinese new year as a festival, and the transition from December to January would always be just a new month to him. Since he didn't celebrate it was easy for him to forget what January 1st was to him, or even when it came around each year. Only his sister ever remembered. It was Ren's birthday. Given that Ren didn't celebrate, be it new year or birthday, He'd agreed to come along with Mithy and his sister for what could only be described as "New Year's Fun". Ren made a mental note to make sure they did something just as rediculously stupid for Chinese New Year. It was only fair, and besides, Chinese new year was much more fun than this. He already knew Mana would object to doing /anything/ Chinese. Ren might have loved Japan, but there was no fighting his culture. Anyways, here they were, on a hiking camping trip. Fun beyond belief, of course. Ren just adored rocks. The ridge below them was shadowed in early twilight, just as the sun began to turn the sky pale orange. It was all rock, with seldom few vines and small foliage that looked like they were holding the whole thing together, like inadequate glue. They'd pitched their camp on this mountain, somewhere up the middle of the path, and now they were heading to the peak, for sunset. They'd long passed the sign that said "none beyond this point", of course, they'd never seen it. Some other stupid soul had thought it funny to uproot the sign and toss it off the side of the cliff. Rain had taken it's toll on the remaining splinters, all that was left was a pile of rotting wood. So it was a given, of course, that so much as a step in the wrong place could lead them all down to a horribly unfortunate fate, and what would this story be without that, so thus began the chain of events. It was conversation as normal. Nothing special, just reflections on the new year, various resolutions, Ren hadn't come up with his yet. He didn't intend to, until the /real/ new year. And since everything he said seemed to draw /some/ reaction from the blonde and busty female, perhaps he just caused her to step with a little more gusto than usual. The crack was not gradual. They could not hear it coming. Mana had no chance to react. The stone carved out as neatly as it did in the movies, leaving nothing to clutch to, and no one near enough to grab. As Mana began her decent off the mountain, Ren's reflexes saw fit to grab for her. He latched onto her outstretched hand, but as physics would have it, Mana's outragious bust as well as the forces of gravity causing her to accelerate at 9.8 meters per second, squared, led her to outclass the shrimpy and -not- moving Ren. Uncomfortably they both fell from the mountain, Ren doing his best to slow the fall and failing miserably. Not by choice, they left Mithos alone at the top. When finally they made it to the ground, Ren had only stopped them significantly enough to avoid mortal damage. He landed on his back, which was already his weak point from a similar fall years ago, and lay in pain. [[wow. THAT was long. ]]

All she could do was keep asking herself "Why?" Why did she have to be there for their conversation? Why did Mithos have to come up with such a crazy idea? Why was she always involved in things she didn't really want to be in? Why did she always have to fall for that face Mithos made? And Why, oh God why did it always have to involve Ren? She couldn't stand many people in the school. But she would have gladly spent more time with all of them than Ren. Was it some bright idea of Mithos's to get her and Ren to get along? It would seem he was trying harder and harder these days. Why couldn't he let sleeping dogs lie? She tolerated Ren for Mithos's sake. But why in the world would he expect her...no FORCE her to like Ren? It was a point that was making her angrier and angrier with each step on the mountain side. Wasn't it enough that she accepted their little gay fling? Wasn't it enought that she kept from killing Ren in the first place? What right did Mithos have to expect her to be friends with the little worm?
She kept stepping, thoughts nagging. She never saw that crumble coming until it happened. At first it felt as if the wind itself had grabbed her back. She remembered staring into the suprised eyes of her brother. Then something most unexpected. The golden eyes of Ren who had tried to grab her, but ended up falling with her. They fell for what seemed like a while until they hit the bottom part of the forest below. Mana felt a sharp pain in her leg as the boulder that fell with them landed on it. But she felt a soft undercusion as she landed on Ren. She sat there a moment in shock. Partly from having a gigantic rock on her leg, and partly for EVER being this close to the chinaman. She blinked a few times and started to mutter.
"Well this is just bloody brilliant," she growled, "Now what?"

"Nngheh" Ren's first words were a moan of pain. The big rock had missed his leg, thankfully, but mana slammed right into him. He could already feel the blood soaking out of his back, his own spine acting like a serated knife as it plowed against the unforgiving earth. And there was a scar there too. wouldn't that just be nice, if his scar had opened up? that would be ugly.
"Stop yelling." Ren got out, flexing his fingers just to make sure he hadn't ended up paralysed. He sighed in relief when they moved. Tenderly he scooted himself out from under Mana, and tried to sit up without using his back. Blood poured like a waterfall out from under his shirt. Ren hadn't managed to keep his back straight very well. It hurt just to sit up. He took a look at the rock, and slipped his hands under it. This, was going to hurt. With a single pained heave he lifted the rock and rolled it off of Mana's rather purple looking leg. He supported himself on his hands until he rolled over onto the ground at Mana's feet. It hurt too much to move his back. And he was feeling faint, too. He was beginning to regret having tried to save her. It's not like he'd even receive thanks.
"Wait for Mithy. It's not like he'd abandon us at the bottom of a mountain. He saw where we fell." Ren felt little drips of sweat make their way off his forehead. In pain, losing blood, not good. If Mana did nothing, he'd probably /die/ before Mithos made it down here.

Mana groaned and winced as he moved the rock from her leg. It looked disfigured and very angry. She knew it would be a while before she could walk. She looked at the collapsed Ren and groaned. She reached around to her backpack. She was lucky enough to have remembered the medical stuff before they left. Mithos was so excited that he forgot.
She dug into her bag and scooched closer to him as carefully as I could.
"This is going to hurt, but try not to scream too much like a girl, " she said gently taking him us as she could, "There could be more rocks."
Over time, she had begun to tease Ren more. Especially since Ellie went back to America. She just kinda left one day and said that she had enjoyed the time they had but she didn't have time for games. She had some important business in America. Nothing angered Mana more, but when she thought back on it she figured it was for the best. Girls really weren't Mana's thing and Ellie was just a distraction to more important things. It still left a pretty deep wound in her heart though. El was the only person outside of her brother that she completely trusted and loved. So instead of getting Emo about it, she took it out on Ren, despite her brother's disproving looks and scoldings.
She lifted off his shirt, not giving him much of an option and observed the wounds on his back. Most of them were old ones. Lots of scars, as she had, from bad memories past. They were all so angry around that dark Tao symbol on his back which struck a nerve a little for her. One just chose to make itself known again with this fall. Then there were several new wounds which would probably make more scars in the long run.
"You should have taken better care of these," she said in a low tone as she finished patching him up, "And now that you have my brother around, maybe you can have him take care of these new ones. Just make sure not to get TOO rough in bed, hrm? The deed is already ugly enough as it is without having your blood everywhere."

"Hmph! Pervert." Ren commented. He bit his tongue as she moved him and patched him up. He was already accustomed to swallowing pain, and it would be a cold day in hell before she got so much as a wince out of him. Though she was causing him to scowl quite a bit. Mana barely knew the origins of his old scars, there was no way she could know if he even had the choice to heal them.
"Don't say stupid things. I'dve wrapped my old scars if I could have. The situation merely did not allow for it. And some are just too deep." Ren stated, as if she dare scold him on his wounds. His father had been a real fanatic for survival training, and that generally did not allow for a fresh roll of gauze or a needle and thread along with you. Lots of wild animals got their hands on him. not to mention when his father struck him, the marks were generally permanent. If he was lucky, it would only bruise. In all situations, he'd been at a loss for proper medical care. Then there were the two big scars, this which had just opened, and then the lethal one that ran along the devision of his abs. He'd attained those in the shaman tournament. The one in his abs was deep enough to kill, and it was by true miracle he was still alive.
The memory of his first kiss always made him blush, so he tried to forget it. Mana would easily misunderstand why he was blushing. "And would you stop talking about that? We only slept together once... and it was pure accident! The alcohol did it. We're only friends, even if you seem to be insinuating that you'd like us to be more. Didn't know you had a thing for gay men. Well, don't get your hopes up." Ren was in full-fledged denial of any feelings for Mithy, even though they were close friends. And almost too close, for a pair of male friends. But Ren didn't think much of it. It seemed he could only see the truth of their relationship with beer goggles on.

Mithos swore to himself loudly and repeatedly as he began searching for a way down the mountain. His first instinct had been to catch his falling sister, but Ren had moved that little bit faster and taken the fall, too. Knowing there was no point to watching them fall, the englishman immediately set off to find a safe path. It wouldn't be easy, but the two of them could look after themselves - he just hoped they had common sense enough to try and get on at least until he found them.

"It may have been the alcohol," she said with a small smirk, wincing briefly as she examined her leg, "But alcohol only enhances emotions. Emotions that had to be there in the first place you fruit! If you didn't have those emotions to begin with in the back of that tiny twisted brain of yours, you would have never....done that. *makes a disgusted face* There is no use in denying it when you are sober either. You practically devour my brother with your fairy eyes everytime you look at him. Then there are all those times you "accidently" brush his hand or some bullshit like that. I'm just waiting for you to take your head out of your ass, grow up a bit, and just admit to how much of a fruit you are."
For some reason, this conversation was irritating her more than it should. She surmised it was because she cared so much for her brother that she didn't want him to get hurt. He was too good for that. Honestly, she thought he was too good for Ren but knew he would be furious if she said so. So most of the time she kept her mouth shut about the whole thing and tried not to think about it. If she did, it would only make her angry and sick. So why bother? So that was it. She was concerned for the sake of her brother and nothing more.....

"Alcohol destroys your inhibitions. Just because I don't /hate/ him, doesn't mean I, that I, -I would SLEEP with the man when sober. I'm /not/ gay! I like women!" Ren's face was red, half anger but half embarrassment. How, exactly, was he supposed to prove his point? There was no way in hell that he could be homosexual, he just happened to have a... strong, friendship with Mithy. After a moment of growling and thought, his golden eyes drew to slits and he looked at her.
"Hmph! I'll show you who's a fruit." Ren declared, and having already surpassed the pain of sitting up, he lunged over far enough to grab teh back of Mana's neck and draw her into a kiss. Ren made a mental note to wash his mouth out when he got home. If only Mana hadn't been the only girl in the vicinity.

Finally sliding down the path to a stop, Mithos stared in something akin to disgust at Ren kissing his sister. Apparently, they didn't need his help - they seemed to be doing fine by themselves. Trying very hard (and failing miserably) to keep the distaste and vague anger out of his voice, the tall englishman folded his arms and spoke pointedly, "And here was me thinking I needed to come and rescue you."

Mana was caught off guard only for a moment. Her heart fluttered a bit as he did so. His kiss was in no way romantic though. It was only forced to prove a point. She knew that. But then there was her brother.
With one gigantic shove, she shoved Ren back a good distance with a growl.
"I do need your help Mithos," she said with a look of disgust, " I need your help keeping me away from this psychotic fruit in denial. He's libel to do anything to prove his point. Can we go home now?"
Even though Ren wasn't feeling anything, she was slightly. It disturbed her a lot and she did anything to shake it from her mind. Why was her body reacting this way? It was just the jolt from the fall. She would never have anything to do with this bastard. She winced and she crawled over to the wall of the mountain and pulled herself up. A pain shot through her ankle and instead she took it out on the person nearest.
"And if you ever touch me again," she said looking over at Ren with a dangerous glare, "I will kill you."

Ren paled considerably at the appearance of his love interest whom he denied as love interest. Smooth, real smooth. If there was anyway to outright deny his love for Mithos, it was to deny it right in front of his face. The problem being that just by the tone of Mithy's voice, Ren could tell he hadn't taken his little action well. Ren hadn't felt a thing- he didn't /like/ mana. He liked her brother. And apparently he'd just fucked that up royally.
The searing pain that accompanied Mana pushing him backwards unexpectedly (although given, if Mithy hadn't shown he would've been prepared for it) had caused Ren temporary lack of the use of his voice. That, and the lump in his throat that caught him before he put his foot in his mouth trying to explain the situation. The Englishman was not likely to accept ANYTHING he said in his defense, considering that he'd been denying his gayness... and Ren, as much as he tried to forget, remembered that Mithy had confessed to an infatuation over him that one morning after. They'd remained friends but, they both denied strong feelings for the other. And now what was Ren supposed to say? There was no way he'd really deny it to Mithy personally... Since it would be a lie, of course, and it'd crush him more than he was now. But he also could say nothing in front of Mana...
Ren let out a noise that sounded like a dying weasle as proof of his pain. His teeth were clamped together, his eyes slammed shut, and he could do nothing but wait for some way back to camp- he couldn't walk, and all he really felt like doing was curling up in a corner and dying.

Raising a slim eyebrow at his sister, Mithos snorted in distaste and practically stomped over (although he was a little more dignified) and picked the two of them up around their waists, clearly no longer in the best of moods, though he was careful of Ren's large, gaping wound as he started back up the trail he had found.
Almost half an hour later, the englishman unceremoniously dumped the two casualties by the fire he had lit earlier, and flopped down on the other side with a heavy sigh, rubbing at his arms with a grimace. Though neither of them were particularly heavy, carrying a couple hundred pounds of what was practically dead weight for half an hour had not done him any good. He would probably sulk for a while, in his own, rather dignified way. He wasn't even entirely sure what he was more annoyed about - the fact that Ren had kissed Mana, or that Ren had kissed Mana. Not that he and Ren had a thing, or anything. It wasn't like he had... Feelings for Ren. Not at all.
God, this new year's was not going as planned.

Mana squeaked a bit as she was being roughly picked up by her brother. She had never seen him so angry before. It kind of scared her. So she kept as quiet as they did.
There was nothing to say. Ren had made an ass of himself yet again. He always seemed to be good at doing that. And this time he got himself into a doozie and brought Mana with him. She had nothing to do with this little senario and yet she always seemed to be in the middle of their problems.
She sighed heavily and drug herself over to her tent where she crawled in and zipped it up. She needed to treat her injury before it became infected so she quickly set to work. All the while her mind was on the two silent boys outside of the tent. The fact was she was in the middle of it and while she didn't give two shits about Ren, she was concerned about her brother. She knew she had to make things right again. This would mean, most likely, helping Ren. And given that he was in such denial...it would take some time.
She came back out of the tent with some chips and settled farther from either of them. She watched Mithos, who looked to be in denial about how pissed he was. Then Ren who looked as if he had just been smacked with a rolled up newspaper. Mana sighed and ate bit.
"Hey RUDE," she said looking over at Mithos, "Aren't you going to see if he's alright? I thought Tom taught you better than that. I got a bum leg so I can't...*mumbles under her breath* plus Im worried he will attack me again."

Ren had to admit he'd looked up when mana called 'hey rude', since he was more accustomed to her insulting him than her insulting her brother. They were painfully inseperable.
Ren had done himself the justice of passing out on the way here, and had only recently woken up. His back was STILL bleeding, which had made him faint to begin with, but the pain from being carried so uncerimoniously through forest had given him enough frequent shocks of pain to just cause him to blackout. His neck hurt from snapping when Mana called. With a grimace he set it back down and just listened to Mana yell at her brother. Why did she give a shit about him? Was this more torture? Certainly Mithos was the last person he had anything to say to. And he was the one who ought to be apologizing. But nagging in the back of his mind, he asked, "for what?" Since it was true that niether of them were supposed to have any feelings for the other... Why was there any offense?

Head snapping up at his sister's yell, Mithos rolled his eyes, very much not in the mood for this. "Oh, be quiet." He snapped, getting to his feet and slipping into his tent, reappearing a moment later with a small bag and heading over to Ren. His own anger shocked him considerably - He had never spoken to Mana like that before. Sitting beside Ren, the englishman pulled several things from his small bag - the makings of a rudimentary first aid kit. "Hold still." He muttered, and said nothing more as he cleaned and bandaged the smaller boy's wounds. When he was done, he simply folded his arms and leant back against the lage rock behind him.

Ren didn't so much as wince when Mithy cared for him. Since he didn't know how to respond he wouldn't respond at all. He was in a great deal of pain, but once again he restrained it, and once Mithy was done he scooted away enough to get to his bag that he'd brought. It was a small satchel of olive green coloring, and his sister always packed it for him for trips. He fished through for whatever bento box Jun had prepared, and found two instead of one.
He scooted back to the fire and took a look at the square box. it was the same color scheme as the bento, but with a bow on top. Ren just looked at it quizzically and pulled the bow. Slipping the lid off the box, he looked in and observed the small cake. It was hand-frosted with a little '16' squiggled on top. He was the last of his friends to turn 16. He was actually born a year later... but on the first day of that year.
He cracked a sad smile. At least somebody'd remembered. He'dve been happy if they weren't in the situation they were. His golden orbs flicked over to Mithy, who was still raging, then fell softly back on the cake. "Hmph... I forgot. It's my birthday tomarrow." Ren looked forlorn, his finger now toying with the candle which was pushed into the cake at a sloppy angle.

Mana watched the two with an irritated sigh. So much for a pleasant holiday. Mithos promised her that this was going to be a relaxing weekend. That was the only way he got her to come. Well that and stupid Marco Polo. But then he turns around and snips at her. He'd only done that a few times, an all of them made Mana's stomach turn. When Mithos leaned back against the rock, many options went through her head. Then she heard Ren mention about his birthday in the morning. Her eyes widened. Perhaps this was her shot for a quick fix. Much as it made her stomach turn, she took a deep breath.
"Really," she said as cheery as possible, "Well then maybe we will have to celebrate somehow. Eh Mithos?"
Ren looked at her as if she had two heads. She just returned a look at him that said, "Keep your mouth shut and trust me, dipshit."

Raising a slim eyebrow and looking over his shoulder at his sister, Mithos shrugged a little, looking back to Ren. "I suppose so." He agreed half-heartedly, but cracked a small smile at the image of Ren toying with the candle. He just couldn't help it. Ren had a certain charm about him when he was all bandaged up like that, and Mithos had never been able to stay mad at Mana for very long. Getting to his feet and stretching a little, arms still aching, he headed for his tent. "...I'll cook us some dinner." He said simply, disappearing into the tent for a moment before reappearing with a small satchel bag full of easy-to-cook food.

Ren watched Mithy out the corner of his eye, and then he stuck and finger into the frosting of his cake and licked it off. He'd barely just bagan to sutely suck the frosting from his index finger when his eyebrow quivered and he removed the finger and wiped it on his pants. His sister had made the cake herself. Now Ren loved his sister dearly but... she couldn't cook the water off of a hot plate. That is to say, everything she made tasted horrible.
Ren took a moment to recover from the shock of the horrible food. He cleared his throat and set the cake down, before getting an idea. He picked it up and held it out in Mana's general direction. "Want a slice?" Ren resisted the urge to smirk or do anything that would give him away. Hopefully Mithy wouldn't take his gesture the wrong way... but there was no way in hell Ren would make him suffer through THAT cake.
