Mithos laughed at that, shook his head a little. "Now that? That's a funny thought." He said, shaking his head again as he sipped his coffee. "No interesting stories of the last eighteen years to tell, then?"

"Nah. Got in a little trouble with three or four mafias. Nothing big. That kinda thing happens when you dad was a big ringleader of the whole circuit. So needless to say, I pissed a couple people off. Nearly got tossed into a bridge abutment. But that's all boring, right? I mean, i'd go into the details, but they're boring, and you'd die. Not quite worth it for a good few minutes of entertainment... is it?" Ren smirked and sipped his coffee, the most relaxed he'd been in years. It was a nice setting, and Mithos was the perfect one to share it with.

Mithos chuckled, sipping at his coffee as he watched his friend. He really had missed this, over the years. "I suppose not. I'd guess I've a few tales to tell - went to war and all that, you know how it goes."

"Ah, i've been working on that, too, actually. Since the whole, initial purpose of the Tao was to supply undead warriors to the battlefield, obviously, i've been working on government relations. Of course, I had to have the senate building haunted, but i'm sure those communists will get the message sooner rather than later." Ren snickered at his own ingenious plot. "But, you were actually out there serving queen and country, eh? Anything amazing happen on the battlefield? You came back alive, thats accomplishment in itself." Ren didn't mention how much he'd greive if he hadn't.

Mithos nodded, sipping at his coffee once more. "Yeah, I guess so. I made a lot of friends - and lost of a lot, too. Nothing really... Monumental, though." He lied smoothly, not particularly wanting Ren to know of Mithos' only real long term relationship since he'd left school.

"Hmm, no great war stories all those generals were yapping about at the party? I suppose that's fair. Better nothing happened than something horrible, I guess." Ren leaned back and stared at the fire. It was almost hard to believe nothing happened, after all... it was a war. He knew, even Bason still had amazing stories from his war days. Then again, back when they fought with spears and swords, was alot more fun than today's cowardly shoot-and-bomb techniques. The world would probably be better off without gunpowder, Ren surmised.

"Oh, a few of them, but the generals always do that. I've heard one retell a war that I was in, and I swear, half the things he said, I must have blinked and missed. They elaborate. Wars really aren't all they're cracked up to be." Mithos said, shaking his head as he set his coffee on the small table between the armchairs and rolled up his sleeve, pointing to a knot of white skin just above his elbow. "Got caught off guard by an enemy soldier when I was on an espionage mission. If I'd heard him a split second later, he'd have killed me."

"Espionage? That seems like you." Ren smirked and looked at the little discolored knob. Bullets were never fun. "Hmm, wars seem like so little after my youth. That shaman tournament was bigger than any war had the potential to be. Of course, it was a lot more free-for-all and a lot less strategy. Then again, those people who play wars like a game, are rather sick themselves." Ren didn't like the whole, gambling with life aspect of war. One of the reasons he felt his family was entitled to supply warriors that were already dead, and save the lives of some of his countrymen.

Mithos shrugged, pulling the sleeve of his shirt back down and picking up his coffee cup. "That's how the tacticians see it - like a game. They know, though, that there's no such thing, really, as acceptable loss. It still happens, though." He said, shaking his head a little.

Ren nodded wearily. He took another sip and then set the cup down on the conveniently placed side table between them. "So. No wife, no kids, and you've been discharged. What the hell are you doing back here in Japan? Even I moved back to China once we graduated."

"I went back to England for a few years, but it's changed so much from when I was a kid. I don't know... I think the thrill of being somewhere new is bigger when you're a child. I'd rather stay put now." He said, sipping at his drink again. "Besides, there's a fair few bad memories back in England that I'd rather not face again."

"Hmph, memories are memories. In the end... you can't get away from them by moving. They're with you, after all." Ren said philosophically. Of course, he couldn't really say he had any place-related memories, besides his mild fear of dark enclosed objects. It was mostly just the mention of his father that made him remember. But that wasn't going to stop him from living in his own house. "Well, there's nothing wrong with Japan. Closer for me." Ren smirked slightly. A trip to Japan was far more manageable for him, than a flight over to england. And Ren usually did whatever he could to avoid flying over the endless void that was Russia.

Mithos chuckled once again, finishing off his coffee and setting the mug down on the coffee table as he snuggled further into the chair. "...I missed you." He said simply, staring into the fire. And it was true - He'd missed Ren every day, the thought of him lurking at the back of Mithos' mind constantly.

Ren blushed, just at the suddenness of the statement. Obviously he expected it, to an extent. But it seemed more like one of those things that was just... understood.
"Yea... you too. It's pretty lonely over in China, now that I think about it. That's something I try not to do... is think about it."

"I know what you mean. Even though I made alot of friends in the army, I still... Missed being able to talk to you." Mithos told him, still staring at the fire as he rifled in his pocket, pulling out a packet of cigarettes and a lighter. Silently, he pulled one from the packet, letting it hang between his lips as he lit it.

Ren nodded, quietly, until Mithy pulled out the pack of cigarrettes. "When'd you start that nasty habit? Tobacco'll kill you." Ren said, scolding his friend. He really hated drugs, along with his hate of booze. Cigarettes were disgusting, and they didn't even smell good, nor taste good. Ren never really understood the people who indulged. Even his grandfather didn't smoke one of those old-person's pipes. Or, well, he /hadn't/. He wasn't doing much of anything, now.
"You really ought to drop the habit."

Mithos cast his friend a sideways glance and shrugged, taking a long drag on his cigarettes, blowing the smoke in rings. "Picked it up a few years ago. Lost a good friend, that's all." He said dismissively around the cigarette hanging from his lips.

"Hn. Well. An old friend is now back. Cause enough to quit?" Ren waved his hand by his head, trying to disperse the smoke that Mithy was blowing out. He stood up and walked over to him, arms folded. "Really, you're killing the nice aftertaste of your coffee, for the both of us. Had we been younger, i'dve taken that and stomped it out."

Mithos chuckled, taking the cigarette and stubbing it out in an indent in the coffee table that looked designed for the purpose. "Sorry. Old habits die hard." He apologised, smiling up at his friend. "Another drink?"

"Hmph, if you stick around me, they'll die fast and hard. I'm not about to let you choak due to something as hilariously preventable as lung cancer. And no thanks, and more coffee and i'll never sleep tonight. But it was good." Ren said, still standing but turning his face to the fire. It was a nice temporary feeling, being taller than Mithos. Despite the fact he was sitting down.
