[[LOL CLOSED.]]
I can't remember the last time I went to a party like this.
Mithos Misaki-Covenant took a glass of champagne from a passing waiter with a smile as his eyes scanned the crowds. The last time he'd been to a dinner party like this was probably his prom, and that had been a very eventful night, to say the least. Familiar faces passed by in a torrent, friends and colleagues, those he had met in his short spell in the military, and many more. It was a hazard of skipping from place to place, he supposed as he sipped at his drink, wandering through the room without a thought.
At thirty-six years of age, Mithos was what some would call a strapping young man who stood at almost seven feet tall, his jet black hair falling to his shoulders as it had always done, though his piercing violet eyes no longer hid behind a pair of rectangular glasses. He hadn't changed all that much in the last eighteen years or so, but he doubted most of his schoolfriends would recognise him.

"I hate parties." "I know, Lian, you already agreed it's to keep up appearances." "Doesn't change the fact. I've never had a good party in my life." "What about that celebration when you were 12?" "I /lost/ the final preliminary." "But you passed." "But it wasn't much of a party."
The two chinese people bickered back and forth, the tallest of the two still insisting the younger ought to make the better of it. Her words did little convincing. Ren absolutely hated parties, and he /abhorred/ rich people. It wasn't his fault that he was one. It also wasn't his fault he was now responsible for all affairs of the Tao family. Well, maybe it was. But that didn't make him happy about it. Ren was avoiding the bar like the plague, and was probably the only person standing around empty-handed. Jun at least, had brought a fan. They meandered through the large ballroom, small talking with various people of the upper class. Ren met one man who actually claimed to run a hospital chain, resort chain, private police, and thensome. Ren could barely manage one business... the man was crazy to have three. But few people in the room could claim to have money as old as Ren's. His family had been rich for eons.
Ren let out a somewhat disgusted sigh, and looked over to his sister. He hadn't stopped moving, however, and this tended to create a problem, when even at thirty-five you still had the stature you did in your teens. Meaning, of course, Ren had barely grown, vertically. Oh, there were a few inches, about eight to be exact, but 5'8" was about average for most females... Ren's only claim in his defense was the short average of most chinese males. He just barely made it. Ren had, however, buffed out into the classic male form considerably, and also had himself a bit of a pointy goatee. His tongari was worn much weaker than his younger years, with more hair down than up, but still enough to make his hair appear sholder-length.
Nonetheless, he bumped into someone who may as well have been a giant in Ren's opinion. The man towered over a foot above him, and Ren, although not intimidated, was quick to issue an apology. "Ah, sorry. Couldn't... Didn't see you." Ren peered up and decided there was no way that someone /couldn't/ see that. Then he peared up at the face. Save the lack of glasses, it was very familiar. "Hey..."

Mithos had greeted several old friends on his wander, even bumped into his old colonel and had a very long conversation about 'that one war' where the two of them had lost far too many friends and companions. By the end of the conversation, the colonel's wife looked suitably horrified that they could talk about such things so calmly. It was as he was walking off that he quite literally walked into someone. Mithos, being as tall as he was, hadn't noticed the short chinese man until he walked into him. The englishman regained his balance easily, and somehow managed not to spill a drop of his champagne. Looking down, he stuttered an apology, then stopped, frowning. "Hey..." He muttered, then took another look, laughing a little.
"Tao Ren, is that you?"

"None other." Ren said with pride, which he had much more of for his family these days. He looked up, nearly surprised he didn't break his neck while looking up at the tall englishman. Good thing he was flexible.
"I take it my assumption was right, then, that is you, Mithy." Ren gave him a friendly smirk. "I haven't seen you in ages. You look the same, except, well..." Ren emphasized that he was looking UP at him. "Did you grow, damn you? It's a good thing this room has a high roof." Ren folded his arms, unamused that Mithy was lucky enough to make it to seven whole feet. Jun walked over and looked at the englishman with a smile, then down at her brother. "Old friend? He's not that tall, Lian." Jun was just starting to register this as Mithy, since she'd never known him very well. She also just nearly caught up to the englishman in hight, she was shorter by only five inches. Her spiked hair made up the difference.

Mithos chuckled, sipping at his champagne with a dismissive shrug. "I'm not that tall." He told his old friend with a smile, nodding in greeting to his sister. "Jun, right? Long time, no see." He said with his usual charming smile, before leading the two of them towards an empty table. "So, Ren, it's been, what, eighteen years now? What have you been up to, besides running you family?" He asked, sitting down and sipping his drink again.

Ren eyed the champagne as he took his seat, and his sister next to him. He gave a defeated shrug. "Honestly, that has been about it. It takes an aweful lot to run my family, i'm afraid, especially when it came to setting up our new form of income..." Ren said, obviously discussing how he'd dropped the whole, assasin for hire thing. That unfortunately left him in a bad position with some of the other mafia's his father had been in contact with, and now being out of their loop left some of them feeling vulnerable. Ren had had to deal with a little too much of that.
"Also. Browsing for a spouse." Ren said, upon receiving a look from him sister. "Jun's been trying to set me up for years, and it doesn't help that there are already women chasing me. Not a single one I can find appropriate though. There's just something about most women I can't stand..." Ren grumbled, adding in the 'most' to not offend his sister. Truth be told, she was the only one he could stand. "Can't let the blood line die out, I suppose. Part of the whole heir-to-the-family thing. I bet i've got some cousin out there who can succeed me if I can't procure an heir, but still, we're the main branch. I feel some sort of duty. I'm not too worried, though." Ren sighed. He'd been in denial of his gayness since highschool, and he'd certainly gone out on more dates with females than he cared to remember. Nonetheless, he never found one near as attractive to him... as Mithy had been. Ren carefully waved the thought away.
"Mithos, it has been too long. You and my brother were so... close, in highschool too. Though I surmise that you're probably the aloof type, like my brother? It's a shame you had to drift." Jun smiled, and then grinned at her brother. "Ren, i'm going to walk over to the bar. I assume you don't want anything. I'll be back soon." Jun said, and got up. Quite honestly, she was not expecting her brother to ever produce any babies. Since there was only one person she'd ever seen him fall for...

Mithos smiled to himself at Jun's statement, shrugging dismissively once more as she left. Once she was at the bar, Mithos looked over to Ren, idly toying with his now-empty champagne glass. "Tom and Mana both gave up trying to find me a wife years ago." He said with a chuckle, shaking his head a little. "Well... Mana keeps introducing me to a different woman every time I see her. She and Ellie are still close, or so I'm told."

"Hn, you don't have a powerful family bearing down your neck. Nobody in my house is too keen on giving the control over to another branch. True... i'm not sure i'm looking forward to that either. It would be nice, if there were a way to get an heir without dealing with the opposite sex. Quite unfortunately, there's not much of an alternative..."
Ren was mildly relieved to hear Mithos didn't have a wife. Of course, he hadn't expected him to settle down with one anyways. He didn't /need/ to, and Ren knew that if he were in Mithy's position, he'd give up all search for a spouse. At his last reunion with his shaman friends, he'd all but considered Horo's sister. Luckily, he'd realised his desperation before that happened, and thus, was able to put her out of his mind.
"I knew her and Ellie were lesbians. And they made fun of me, pfft."

Mithos laughed quietly, shaking his head as he watched Ren. In truth, it didn't seem like either of them had changed very much in the eighteen years since they'd finished school. Mithos didn't see that as an entirely bad thing, though. Not really. "Yeah, but it's not like they ever really denied it." He pointed out with another laugh, running a hand through his dark hair. "...Doesn't look like either of us have changed that much, huh?"

"Actually, I grew. I'm much taller now. Nearly six feet, just a few inches short." A few inches, translating as about four, which was in effect quite a bit. Though Ren would nod in agreement that personality wise, neither had made leaps or bounds. They were still pleasantly the same... and Ren liked that fact.
"And I also changed my hairstyle, of course." Ren said, wondering if Mithos would still remember the argument they'd had years ago about his hair, and how Ren hadn't thought it was proper for men to have long hair. He'd obviously changed his philosophy, if not, just a bit, for Mithy's sake.

Mithos smiled to himself, toying with his champagne flute still as he nodded. "I noticed. Didn't you once say that men shouldn't have long hair?" He joked, remembering the aftermath of that party all those years ago. He was suprised at himself for remembering, having had such a rancid hangover that morning. He guessed it was just one of those things that stuck with you.

Ren's eyebrow twitched, he'd reeeally hoped Mithos wouldn't remember. He folded his arms indignantly and grumbled. "I did. But, young foolishness, yes? I've changed my tune. It looks nicer this way." Ren said with a nod, agreeing with himself. "Though I will always have fond memories of my tongari, of course."

Mithos laughed shortly, shaking his head. "Of course." He agreed, smiling softly. "It does look better on you now, though." He added, reaching out and taking hold of a strand, tilting his head to the side for a moment.

Ren felt a strange aroused chill run up his spine as Mithos touched his hair. He blushed profusely, and took him a second to even utter the "Eh..." to let Mithy know, Ren wanted to know what the hell he was doing. He hadn't been so close, physically, to Mithy for years. Of course, that didn't mean he didn't enjoy it. To this day, he hadn't slept with anyone else. Surely not with those horrible dates.

Mithos took in Ren's shock (and everything else) with a quiet smile, moving back to his previous position with a sort of lazy grace, resting his elbow on the table and his chin on his fist. He had... Missed just being around Ren. It was something he'd grown accustomed to in the few years they'd had at school, and to this day, Mithos had only had one relationship that even came close to what he'd had with Ren, and it hadn't ended well.

Ren settled down with an almost timidness, something he only ever got when around Mithy. He was used to having girls fawn over him, but the most any of them ever got was a blush. It usually ended in anger, though. Ren was never able to hold a really good grudge against Mithy.
"Ah... gee, you know, you'd think the bar was in another county, not the other side of the room. Wonder where Jun went? I hope she didn't over-do it schmoozing at the bar..." Ren showed a momentary concern for his sister, who basically pulled an ellie when drunk. Though she could hold her liquor better than Ren, she still wasn't cut out for heavy drinking.

Mithos chuckled, shrugging expansively. "Let's just hope she's not as bad as you, eh?" The englishman teased, reminiscing on years gone by. This was another thing he had missed about Ren - the ease of conversation, and the banter that came with it. Mithos had loved everything about Ren, really, but never truly acknowledged it until they had stopped talking. After all, you don't know what you've got until you lose it.

Ren smirked slightly. "She can hold about one more drink than me. Which would mean... she can hold /one/." Ren sat back, and gave Mithy a look. "Y'know, thanks to you, I haven't drank a bloody drop since /then/. At least I know my tolerance is zero. Jun likes her wine a bit more than I can refuse her, so, i've seen her go overboard. Giggling idiot, a lot like Ellie." Ren remembered very little, but he knew that Ellie had been giggling manaicly while whacking the camera from Mana's hands. He sometimes wondered if she even still had that tape. Somehow, it seemed like a keeper.

"That isn't a bad thing, you know, you avoiding alcohol - like you said, at least you know now." Mithos pointed out defensively, though the smile stayed on his face. "That was all Ellie did, I think, wasn't it - giggle? I did kinda stop paying attention at some point, though." He added with a chuckle, tapping the side of his face in thought.

"Oh obviously." Ren said so as if there could be no other way. He said many things this way. Ren was very sure of him self... even if he was wrong. Then he'd just deny he was wrong. But, he was very rarely wrong. "I'm pretty sure at some point, we both stopped paying attention to /ellie/." Ren said, remembering the situation in which they woke. He was surprised they could talk about it so calmly now... like a fond memory. Despite the consequences, all the trouble Mithy got in and their mutual loss of virginity, Ren figured that probably it was a good idea to have that party. It was much easier to think so now, after all.
