I'm gonna make it out alive.
Another year of dredgery and woe. As if middle school hadn't been hell enough, what with that competition right ready to rip you a new one if you weren't strong enough. Countless lives went down in flames for all to see, the entire shaman population of the world. Now that it was all gone and done, it was time to resubmerge into the lives that all the normal humans led, and resubmit to the laws that bind us all, including that which said school was mandatory.
Tao Ren was not pleased.
The brunette "roomie" passed him on his way out, still meandering about the inn like a zombie, a hand resting idly inside his green pants. Ren was already leaving for school, but Yoh was only up because if he didn't make breakfast now, his fiancee would tear off his head. "Ne Ren, why'd you choose a school in Tokyo?" Yoh looked over, onyx eyes as dull as usual. "I don't like your uniform." "That's not a very good reason. The schools in Funbari Hills are closer." "I'm not lazy like you are, Yoh. I like the walk." "You never eat breakfast with us." "I have to get going."
With that, Ren left the Inn and Onsen, stepping out into the dark, crisp air. Ren preferred walking before dawn anyways, despite that he knew the sun would be up completely, just as soon as he made it to school with some time to spare. Dawn was nice, though he particularly enjoyed sunset. The rise of the moon and chill of the night... much nicer than the sun. Watching clouds go by was Yoh's department.
As the sky changed from pink to gold to blue, Ren crossed city lines into the bustling city, cars honking from every known direction. The brightening sky bode well for most of the anxious teens ready to start their first day of highschool. He didn't imagine many people coming here would /not/ be happy. High school entrance exams were general hell... no matter where you made it, as long as you were in school, you were glad they were over. Ren was, of course, the exception. He shifted his bag on his sholder and watched the freshmen flock in, the sophmores approach with the great wisdom of a second-year, and the juniors enter with a "let it end soon" type of grimace. Ren just smirked and continued walking onto the school grounds. It was a nice school, rather large, compared to that stick hut of a building Yoh took his classes in.
Ren stopped inside for a locker number and class assignments. After his things were dropped off he took his schedule and plopped himself outside the school building by the stairs, looking over his list. "English class? How useless... and when did I get signed up for Art forms 101? ...I'll kill her." Ren glared at the choice and KNEW he shouldn'tve let Jun touch his class selection last. But Kickboxing 401 was on there too, so he wasn't... too upset.

Mana groaned as her alarm went off. She had already hit the snooze button twice and yet the annoying thing insisted on disturbing her grand dreams of adventure. She rubbed her eyes and stared at it. 5:30 AM. Why had she insisted on getting up that early again?
“Oh right,” she growled swinging her feet reluctantly, “Flabber.”
She went over to her dresser and picked out her black Puma training outfit and threw on her special weighted shoes. As she started to walk out the door she caught site of her new school uniform and grimaced. Even the English schools gave her the option for the male uniform. It had been a long time since she had worn a skirt.
“Not since father’s funeral,” she said softly as she stared a bit, then huffed and went out the door, grabbing her headphones along the way. She clicked it on to some Def Leppard and headed out the door.
She was still having some jet lag issues, even though they had been there almost a month. Then again, Mana never slept well at night to begin with. She hadn’t since her father’s death. For some reason, she could never get the image of him being bombed and sunk into the sea by those despicable Chinamen. She hated them with all of her being. Anyone who looked moderately Chinese made her angry. This is why she was a little irritated with Tom when he told them that he was being stationed in Japan due to the threat of oncoming war. But despite all her arguing, they had moved anyway. She decided after reading up on Japanese culture and history that they were infinitely better than the Chinese and that she would deal with this matter in style and grace. She was bound and determined to make the best of her adolesant life until she could go her own way and do her own thing. Nothing was going to ruin that vow.
She jogged 10 miles throughout Tokyo, making note of the directions for the school, then went back to their duplex. She smelled Helga, the family housekeeper, making a wonderful English breakfast. No doubt her uncle was in there as well with a cup of coffee and reading the newspaper. No matter if it was England or Japan, Tom never gave up his morning ritual of news and coffee. Mana smirked as her stomach growled. She went up to her room, grabbed her uniform, and took a quick shower. She reluctantly dressed in the provided beige uniform (which she took the liberty of modifying) and combed her light gold hair into it’s usual braid style which rested just below the middle of her back. Once she approved of her look, she brushed her bangs out of her face and went to see where her much adored brother was.
She went down the hall to where his room was and peeked in. As usual, he was still asleep in his bed. He was more of a late day trainer, than an early to rise kind of person. And for the last few mornings, Mana has to pester him to get out of be to go jogging with her to explore the city. She sighed and smirked.
“He just never learns,” she said quietly as she went into his room.
She crept up around his bed, contemplating her next move. Then she saw the perfect opportunity in the form of a foot sticking out of the covers. Since her hands were always like ice, she decided to use that trait to her advantage. She seized the really warm foot with her icy hand and yanked on it.
“Yoho Meathead,” she said suppressing the urge to laugh, instead looking smug, “You should have been up an hour ago, tard! We start school today. Now get ye lazy ass out of bed before I get really hostile.”

Mithos had already been awake for some time, though getting unceremoniously yanked from his bed was not expected. With a yelp, he snatched his foot away, cursing his sister's cold hands. "School? Right. Still not used to this stupid time zone." He muttered, shaking his head as he groped about on the bedside table for his glasses, finally finding them and slipping them on. "...I'm surprised you didn't try and steal my uniform." He remarked, casting a meaningful glance at her skirt as he hauled himself to his feet.
Shaking his head a little, he lazily pulled on his shirt and then looked at the tie. He hadn't worn a proper shirt and tie since... Since Gabriel's funeral. With a small sigh, he quickly tied the tie, then shooed his sister from his room and finished getting dressed. Finally emerging and heading into the kitchen, he grinned at the man who had become his father figure. "Morning, Tom."
The scotsman greeted him with a simple nod, not even bothering to look up from his paper - even as the housekeeper batted at his ankles rested upon the table, muttering. Tom smiled a little, moving his feet from the table and folding up the newspaper. "Brilliant. Food." He muttered with a chuckle, digging in almost as soon as the plate was placed in front of him. Mithos laughed quietly, sitting across from his guardian and picking up the discarded newspaper, flicking through it. "Not for me, Helga, I'll eat later." He said with his usual charming smile.

Mana blinked in suprise at his accusation. She had thought about it, but..
"It would have been like a wearing a circus tent," she said being shooed out of his room, "You and your damned broad shoulders."
She went back to her room and made sure she had everything. All of her school needs rested in a large leather shoulder bag with a silver skull and crossbones clasp. She put her MP3 in as a last thought and then went down to the kitchen. Everyone was already within, started on the morning ritual. Helga was taking their plates away.
"Well here then," Helga said putting the food down in front of Mana, "Master Mithos didn't want it."
"Yay," she said sarcastically as she went over to the coffee pot and poured herself a cup, loading it with sugar and creamer, "Now I'm getting his left overs. What's next?"
Helga gave Mana the narrow eyes. Mana laughed and took her place at the table. She ate some of the food and looked at Helga.
"Of course I am kidding, Helga. I love your cooking. It is the only thing that keeps me sane in a day," Mana said stretching a bit, " Of course that is a matter of opinion."
Helga just rolled her eyes and began to clean up after her breakfast mess. Mana looked over at Tom, then over to Mithos and sighed. The same quiet breakfast table. It had been this way for the six years that they had been together. Mana really didn't mind. There wasn't much to talk about first thing in the morning. She finished the rest of her breakfast and looked at her clock.
"We best be off, Meathead," Mana said standing and streatching again, "Thanks for the wonderful breakfast, as always, Helga. Goodbye Tom. Try to stay out of trouble while we are gone."
She smiled and gave her uncle a quick squeeze around the shoulders, and then walked out the door. She walked out to the end of the walkway and waited for Mithos to catch up with her. They walked side by side in silence for a while. When they got to the school grounds, Mana spoke.
"So you made sure Tom signed you up for Kickboxing right," Mana said poking him in the ribs as he opened the door for them and they headed toward the office to get their sheduels and locker assignments, "Chances are most of these losers would never hold their own against me and I need a real challange, well as close to a challange as you are going to give me. *smug smirk*"

Mithos smiled as he kept reading the newspaper, then finally folded it up, leaning across the table and snatching up the last of Tom's coffee. With a devilish grin, he stood, clapped the scotsman on the shoulder and followed his sister out, grabbing his bag as he went.
"Of course. I'm down for Japanese, Mathematics, Art and..." He trailed off, pulling his class list from his pocket and staring at it, "English." He finished with a grin. "Purely for a laugh, that one." Unceremoniously, he shoved the list back into his pocket, collected his schedule and locker number and headed off. Sneaking a peek at Mana's, he smiled - they were only one locker apart. And then, turning into the corridor, he spotted just who had the locker in between - someone unmistakably chinese.
Swearing to himself, he nudged his sister in the ribs and pointed. "Try not to completely flip, hmm? Trying to make a good first impression."

Mana smirked as he read off his list. "Good," Mana said, "Because if you ask me, I think this school is in need of a good show. I have *reads list* Japanese, Ancient History, Algebra, and Physical Science. All soo boring in their own /special/ way." She huffed as she dropped her bag by her locker and smiled. Only one away from Mithos, just as it should be. She didn't want to have to talk to anyone strange just yet. Just as she finally figured her combination she felt Mithos's frantic nudge. She looked at him as if he was mad, then followed his eye sight to where he was looking. Her heart stopped as she saw a boy walking toward them. He was shorter with oddly styled dark hair and piercing gold eyes. This would have normall intrigued Mana...had he not been so obviously Chinese. Her blood began to boil as she spun on Mithos. Her eyes were a flame. Good impression? GOOD IMPRESSION? "A good impression huh," she hissed at him glaring, "You can make friends with the scum, but if you do I will never speak to you again. You KNOW how I feel about thier kind. I can't even fathom how you can tell me to be cool about this?? And is....does he share a locker between us?!?!? This cannot happen. Fuck..." She saw the guy getting closer and closer. It took all she could muster to keep from beating the shit out of him. And then he had that unwelcome scowl on his face, which just made her even angrier. But she loved her brother, so for his sake she picked up her bag, spun on heel, and started her walk to her first class.

Ren ran a hand through his bangs and approached his locker, watching as the female that had been standing next to it ran off in a fit of anger. He wondered, did that other boy have something to do with it? She'd seen him glacing at himself, but hell if he knew who she was. They were both foreigners, he could tell that for sure. The boy still beside his locker seemed positively British. He had that... European alititude to him. Not that Ren had ever met more than one british person in his life, and not that that person hadn't been his own hieght but... Well, they'd been 13. He bet the green-haired runt he encountered years ago had grown. Ren sure hadn't...
Just as his thoughts drifted too his comrades, he opened his locker to find pictures of them in there. Various photos of him grimacing while others did stupid things like laughing and bunny ears. The only respectible photo was of him and Lyserg, who was too modest to embrace Ren like that when he knew he didn't like it. "J-...Jun!" Ren knew it was a bad idea to go to a school where his sister worked in the admissions office. She had /all/ of his personal information... including his locker number. He certainly never put those pictures there. With a groan, he shut the locker again and looking at the brit beside him. Looking... up, most definitly. Very up. That boy was almost a foot taller than Ren. Ren could do nothing but glare and look away. He hated tall people...

"Mana!" He hissed after his sister, then gave up, wrenching his locker open and half-heartedly shoving his things in, shaking his head. He could feel the chinese boy staring at him, and finally, he shifted his head to return the gaze. After a long moment, he flashed a charming smile, hold out a hand to shake. "Hi there. I'm Mithos." He greeted the other, the english lilt in his flawless japanese unmistakable.

Mana gave Mithos the evil eye before continuing to walk away heatedly. She walked down the hallway for a bit, bag slung over the shoulder. She got a few lude comments along the way due to her irritating feminine uniform. She just glared at the boys, but somehow they took that as a sign of affection.
"Damn," she would hear a lot of them mutter under their breath as she walked by with a scowl on her face.
"Tards," she muttered under hers. A few of them tried to stop her and start a conversation, but she growled an "Excuse me" and kept on her way. She after several flights of stairs she found her first class, Japanese. The bell hadn't even rang yet, so the room was vaccant, save for a few overachievers. She sat in the back closest to the window and continued to mutter as she jerked her books out of her bag.
How can he even think of asking me to be calm, she thought bitterly, You would think after all these years and all that he knows about my life, he would think twice about it. It mean it was the Chinese who murdered my father. But I guess since it wasn't his father that it really dosen't matter to him.
This thought hurt the blond just a little bit. She always considered her and Mithos to be close. They knew everything about each other and what to expect in a fight between them. She continued to grumble in her head as she waited for class to begin.

Ren looked at the hand for a moment, but decided against general rudeness. At least it was a dignified handshake, better than SOME of the greeting measures he'd already witnessed in this school. There were some body parts that were not meant to be rubbed. So, he gave Mithos a short handshake and nodded. "So, you are British. I thought so. You look it." Ren said, examining his hand which tingled from the warm handshake. He supposed he couldn't expect everyone to have cold skin like he did. "The name is Tao Ren, remember it, I don't like to repeat myself." Once a Ren, always a Ren. He just couldn't fight his rude and unwelcoming nature. "I knew a British kid once. Green hair, orphen, bizzare thing he was. Same accent when speaking Japanese." Ren opened his locker to fish out his schedule, generally ignoring his locker neighbor. His eyes looked up to the picture of him and lyserg, contrasting with Ren's dark attire and Lyserg's white trench of Justice. He looked back at his schedule and sighed.
"Worst class of the day first. Art... forms. What the hell is an art form? I'll kill her for putting this on my schedule. What a wonderful first period..." Ren muttered to himself then pulled away from his locker empty-handed.
"Anyways, it's not like you'd know the kid. I'm off to first period Art. Joy."

A week has passed since the trial and it was time for Hao to report to the one person he never thought he EVER see again, Yoh.
As he was walking to the Inn and Onsen he thought back on everything that had happened to him so far. It had been a week after the trail and ever since then he has never been quite the same. After the Shaman fight, his entire world seemed to crash all around him. Of all the places in the world, he was forced to live his idiot of a brother. That alone brought his spirit down, but the most devastating thing of all was what happened after his last fight with Yoh, when he lost, the Great spirits was stripped away from him, along with most of his power. His still could use his fire, but he couldn’t do much more than start a bon fire. It all made him angry. Angry at himself for being so weak, angry at Yoh for being so kind, and angry at the Patch leaders for being stupid enough think that now that his powers were weakened, that he would turn into a helpless little mouse. Not going to happen.
Finally he reached the inn, but when he saw that someone was just leaving, he waited to see who it was. Of all people it was Ren. He waited till Ren was a good way down the street before he stepped out and walked to the already opened door, someone knew he was here.
“Hao come in!” Yelled Yoh’s voice from the kitchen. With a small grin he stepped into his new home.
“Your late Hao.” Yoh said when he reached the kitchen, “you’re going to be late for school you know.”
“Do you really think that I’m going to a normal human school?” Hao asked, stealing a little of the eggs that Yoh was making and ate it. “And why didn’t you say that Ren was staying here?”
Yoh laughed and pushed him away. “You better go to school, you normal now. Deal.” He left for a moment, returning with a new uniform, then turning rarely serious he added. “And you need to be careful about Ren. I haven’t told him that you were going to be staying with us… He might not take pretty well.”
“Well then, I’m just going to have to take the chance then aren’t I?” Hao said, a grin gracing his lips. He took the offered uniform and went to change. In the end he didn’t even wear the whole uniform. He kept the light colored pants, but left his shirt unbuttoned, his red and black tank showing underneath. He left then, without a word to Yoh. The patch had already told him where he needed to go so why bother Yoh?
When he got to the school it he shook his head at all the people. They were looking at him. Was it because he was new? Or maybe because he was drop sexy hot? Either way, Hao hated the attention. He didn’t even want to be there. Finally Hao got to his locker and looked at his schedule. Japanese first. Like he really needed that class. But he didn’t have a choice. The patch made his schedule so he had to go with it.
He was the last one in class with still minutes to spare. He looked around and noticed the only empty seat was next to a blond at the back. He walked there; throwing glares at all that was in his way, making them move. He sat down and crossed his arms across his chest.
How long will I have to endure this torture?

"Lyserg Diethel?" Mithos queried with a short laugh, closing his locker. "I met him a couple of times." He said, following the short chinese boy after a quick glance at his schedule. "...Art forms. What kind of a class is that?" He muttered in English, shaking his head a little. "Never should have let the housekeeper near my class list." He took a long look at Ren, then sighed a little. "Don't worry about my sister. She's got... She doesn't deal well with the chinese." He explained shortly, irritably adjusting his tie. God, he'd forgotten how damn uncomfortable wearing a tie was.
-----
Slipping into the stuffed-to-bursting japanese classroom, a small blonde girl smiled to herself as she sat beside the moody-looking girl by the window. "Hi there." She greeted the girl in slightly-accented (although flawless) japanese. "I'm Ellie. You should cheer up - first day isn't that bad."

"You met that green kid? He's weird. Has a funny way of covering his depression. And making friends. And a lot of things, really. Hope you met him before he turned 6. Generally bad turn of events... he gave us all a history when we met him." Ren nodded, then listening to his comment on the blonde girl. It was that obvious he was chinese? Well, maybe it was true what they said about the eyes. It wasn't like he much cared. Ren was never one to doubt a lack of human compassion. He'd only recently discovered that there /was/ some out there.
"Doesn't make much difference to me, I don't deal well with anybody. I certainly don't discriminate." Ren smirked. He'd pledged to do his best to eradicate hate from the world... but he had no idea how he was going to do that as he was. His other comrades, all of them had more or less "lost" the shaman tournament, and the chance to build their dreams along with it. But they were all working at it in some way or another... Ren had just dreamed a little big. He really... didn't know how to begin.
"So, you got shoved in art, too? Reluctantly? Makes two of us." Ren continued on and entered the assigned room, which looked... an aweful lot like a ballet studio. Art forms... that couldn't mean... dance class? Oh bloody hell. Perhaps the terror was written all over his face, because the beaming teacher- dressed in a leotard and usual dance attire, seemed mildly concerned at his expression when entering the door.

Mana had decided to entertain herself through her beloved music, letting the sounds of Queen's melodic guitar fill her with the joy she had started the day with. It didn't help when she felt sudden company come into her aura. She opened her eyes to slits and glanced over to a very hostle, yet attractive looking male. It seem's that she wasn't the only one in a fowl mood. If anything, he looked more irritated than herself. This gave her a little more comfort.
That was, until this annoying high pitched voice came over even her music. Unfortunately it was in the middle of one of her favorite Queen ballads. Her eyes narrowed once more as she looked over to the presumptios girl and did her best to attempt civility.
"Right," she said sitting back, looking the small blond up and down, "See, I know you are not talking to me when there are such great people like Capitan Sunshine over here. *juts thumb to Hao*"

Mithos' expression of utmost horror and disgust mirrored Ren's almost exactly, and he very almost took a step back. "You've got to be joking." He muttered in english, earning him a good few confused stares. He thought he'd escaped this years ago! He should never have let Helga anywhere near his class list. Tom, knowing him, would jave just laughed it off and let her get on with it. Bastard scotsman he was! Mithos swore quietly, then just resigned himself to it. For some odd reason, he noticed as he glanced around, there were more boys in the class than there were girls. Bizzare.
-----
Ellie laughed quietly, casting a glance over her shoulder at Hao. "Oh, please. Boys are a complete waste of time." She said with a sly grin that belied her naive, childish exterior as she shook her head. "Anyway - It's only japanese class. It's not like it's difficult or anything - even if you're not from around here. And I'm guessing you're not, from your accent."

Mana smirked a bit. She had to share in her revelation about boys. This girl, Ellie, had nearly sounded like her for a moment there. But then she started getting nosier.
"No," Mana said, seeing the teacher walk into the room and quickly hiding her Mp3, "I think we can both agree that I am very obviously not from around here, and no I will no tell you where I am from. Look Ellie, I'm sure you are a nice girl and all, but to be totally honest with you, I am just here to get high school over with as fast as I can. I hate being stuck in school, requiring me to learn many things, about 90% of it I will never use, and forced to communicate with people whom I will never see or talk to again once it is all over. So forgive me if I feel it is pointless make a whole lot of small talk on our four year damnation here when we will probably just forget one another in the future. But it is a pleasure to meet you all the same."
As if on cue, the older crippled teacher began with his lesson. Mana pulled out her books and ended up drawing lazily on them. What she had said was all the truth, but she still felt a little bad for saying it. How else was she supposed to give the bubbly to-smart-for-her-own-good teen a hint

The teacher flocked over to Ren and Mithos, beckoning the two shocked boys into the room. She seemed utterly pleased that she had so many boys in the class this year. Most of them looking around the room in disdain. The few girls in the class looked absolutely hungry though. Hungry for /boys/. And it so seemed they would get their pick.
"Oh my, come in, come in!" Bellowed the broad who led the class. "Please, take off your shoes, you won't need them in this class<3" Ren looked at the floor like one might examine a public toilet. He could just imagine the numerous feet that traipsed across this floor, barefoot. The... the GERMS. "Like hell..." Ren muttered in chinese, as he sat down and took off his flats, exchanging them for his ballet flats that he used for fighting, which he always carried around with him. This action seemed to only impress the teacher more, that Ren came with dancing shoes.
"...Wonderful." Ren got up and joined the line of freshman before he was pushed there.
"Alrighty class! Choose a partner. Choose wisely, we won't be mixing it up much this year! We're starting off with an exquisite dance... the waltz!" Ren scratched his ear lightly. Despite the highness of his caste, his father had been much too involved with his training for Shaman King to teach Ren formal dancing. Table manners were about as far as he got in the 'princely' catagory. Now, to find a partner without two left feet...

Mithos removed his shoes amidst a torrent of very british swearing, then trailed towards the line, slipping on a pair of soft ballet slippers that had somehow found thier way into his bag. Damn that housekeeper, he thought. The waltz? Mithos sighed. At least this was a dance he could do. Thank god for that, he thought, then watched the few girls in the class flock to the boys they fancied or already knew from before school. In the end, there were about four boys left without partners, including him and Ren. The teacher simply beamed and told them they'd just have to live with it.
Damn woman.
-----
Ellie grinned cynically, practically ignoring the teacher, although jotting down the occasional note. "It'll just be worse if you go through the entire four years without making friends, you know. At least then, you've got someone to complain with about everything that's wrong with this place, wouldn't you agree?"

Mana gave her a look. She leaned close to the girl and gave her a cat like smirk. It was the smirk that always enhanced her features and made her aqua eyes sparkle mischeviously.
"That," she said so low that only Ellie could hear, "Is what brothers are for. And it just so happens that I have one. But nice try."
And with that she leaned back up and continued to doodle in her text book. The teacher had started going on of the different ways to write a Kanji letter and how the wrong stroke could make it look catostrophically different. Mana shook her head at the teacher's rantings and sighed. What a drama king. She really hoped, however, that this girl would just get the hint and leave her alone. But something inside her told her that she wouldn't and she groaned inwardly. Already a headache was coming on.

Ren looked less than pleased to be paired with another guy. Of course, it's not like he'd be pleased with anyone for this project, so it may as well have been the guy he'd already met. He groaned inwardly, looking on at the teacher as she demonstrated the steps using a poor unfortunate victem. The look on her young partner's face was priceless.
"Now now! Get into your pairs and practice. I'll come around. For paired boys, Shortest gets the female steps!" The teacher giggled and the students dispersed. Ren looked over at Mithos...
